Typographic self-portrait

Typographic self-portrait created from a pencil sketch manipulated in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, January 2014, as part of my Design Class at SUNY Orange.

Sketch created directly on iPad, on location at Parnell's Pub in NYC, combining two of my loves – drawing and computers.

I am both web designer (creating elegant page layouts in Photoshop), and web developer (writing the code to bring my visions to life using HTML, CSS and jQuery).

I am passionate about drawing and designing, computers, photography and typography.

I am passionate about creating functional beauty, typography that communicates and websites that deliver results.

I started the studio, in a tiny rented office on Madison Avenue, after graduating with a BFA from Cooper Union in 1973.

At Cooper, I studied under Hannes Beckmann, the Bauhaus artist/teacher/designer who survived a Nazi concentration camp to bring the concepts of the Bauhaus school to NYC. I strive to design, create and and communicate using the principles of "less is more" and "form follows function".

I was very fortunate to work for, and learn from, some of the best people in NYC. Current & past accounts include:

  • Museum Of Natural History, Natural History magazine
  • Better Homes & Gardens
  • American Institute of Physics, Physics Today magazine
  • American Management Association
  • Condé Nast, The New Yorker magazine, Wired magazine
  • Meredith Corporation, Country Home magazine
  • National Retail Merchants Association

I was one of the first NYC designers to begin designing magazines, typesetting annual reports and developing my own typefaces on the Mac in 1985.

I'm currently expert-level & working in:
